Hari
Krishna Mandir was built (in 1959) by Dadaji Sri Dilip Kumar Roy and his daughter
disciple, Ma Indira Devi, with the help of a few friends with the sole aim of
creating a permanent nucleus for Sadhana
The
Mandir (alias Ashram) is intended to subserve a twofold purpose: Firstly to
enable a few resident sadhakas to live dedicated lives exclusively for
the Lord. Secondly, to serve those outside devotees who want to derive inspiration
from its atmosphere, Bhajans and Harikatha.
In other words
' to serve as a spiritual dynamo for recharging their batteries of aspiration
and sadhana '
In Dadaji's words: "Spiritual centres can both
stimulate general aspiration today and give the right lead to one-pointed seekers.
We feel that India today needs a few genuine spiritual centres if only to keep
the home fires burning ... Everywhere you look in the world today you see nothing
but strife and discontent.
Our ideal in Hari Krishna Mandir being spiritual,
we can only surrender at the feet of the Divine, Lord Krishna and let Him manifest
through us as He Wills. For we know that if we are completely surrendered to Him,
He cannot help but manifest through us. It will be something of enduring value
in the hearts of men."
"I feel strong it is only because I know that
His Grace is sustaining me and just using me to spread His Name. If I had not
been assured of this I would never have created our temple-home here or anywhere
else. In other words I do claim I have known His Grace and had His Mahaprasad...
Indira Devi is even more blessed in that she has not only had His darshan
but has also touched and talked with Him on many an occasion. A few days ago Indira
gave us a beautiful and apposite simile which bears repetition. She said that
human bodies are like pradips, tiny earthen lamps. When the potter prepares
the lamps and puts them away, people hardly notice what he is doing. He dries
them in the sun, puts them in the fire. Similarly, the Lord prepares His instruments.
It is only when He comes to light the lamps that they assume a lasting significance...
So I keep telling myself all the time that I am just one of these humble lamps
that He in His Grace has lit and that is why I would like to share with you the
little light that has come to me from on high."
